Key takeaways
- Overtime starts at 7:00. From then on, both keeps lose HP every second.
- The drain starts at 3 HP per second and rises by 0.4 HP per second every second.
- Keeps never heal, so an undamaged 1,200 HP keep falls about 71 seconds into overtime. Every match is over by about 8:11.
- Both keeps drain at the same rate, so the keep that has taken more damage falls first.
- If both keeps fall on the same tick, the player who dealt more total damage wins.
Why overtime exists
When two players are evenly matched, their armies meet in the middle of the lane and grind each other down without either keep being threatened. Without a rule to break that, a match could last forever. Overtime makes sure every match has a winner, and it rewards whoever did more damage to the enemy keep before the clock ran out.
How the overtime drain works
At 7:00 both keeps start losing HP on their own. The drain starts at 3 HP per second and grows by 0.4 HP per second every second after that. It hits both keeps equally and ignores towers, units and ultimates.
| Time into overtime | Drain rate | Total HP lost |
|---|---|---|
| 0s | 3 HP/s | 0 |
| 15s | 9 HP/s | 90 |
| 30s | 15 HP/s | 270 |
| 45s | 21 HP/s | 540 |
| 60s | 27 HP/s | 900 |
| 71s | 31.4 HP/s | 1,200 |
Because keeps never heal, even a keep that was never touched reaches 0 HP about 71 seconds into overtime. In practice, most matches end well before that, because at least one keep has already taken damage.
Tiebreaks
- One keep falls first. That player loses. Since the drain is equal, this is whoever had less HP when overtime started, plus anything their opponent's units do on top.
- Both keeps fall on the same tick. The player who dealt more total damage during the match wins.
- The match hits the 20-minute cap. The keep with more HP wins, then total damage dealt. With overtime in place this should never happen.
How to play for overtime
- Chip damage counts. Every hit on the enemy keep before overtime is HP they won't have when the drain starts. A small push that gets a few hits in before being cleared can win the match later.
- Protect your keep HP. Letting units reach your keep, even briefly, costs you in overtime. Tower upgrades are strongest late in the match for this reason.
- Know who's ahead. Compare the two keep health bars as the clock nears overtime. If you're ahead, defend. If you're behind, you need to deal keep damage now.
- Keep attacking in overtime. Your units still hit the enemy keep on top of the drain, which can make it fall several seconds sooner.
