Key takeaways
- Every keep starts with a free Guard Tower. Each time you advance an age, the keep gets that age's tower for free, and older towers stay.
- Each tower can be upgraded once, for gold. Towers never take damage and always shoot the closest enemy in range.
- Every tower out-ranges every unit (the longest unit range is 280), so no unit can shell your keep from safety.
- Every age has one ultimate. It is free, hits every enemy unit on the lane and has a 42–60 second cooldown.
- Ultimates are softeners: a single cast never kills a full-HP unit of the same age, but it tips a close fight your way.
Keep towers
Towers sit on your keep and shoot the closest enemy unit in range. They can't be attacked, and they never move. You start with one, and every age you advance adds another, so a keep in the Future Age has four towers firing at once.
| Age | Free tower | Upgrade | Upgrade cost | Damage (free → upgraded) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stone Age | Guard Tower | Reinforced Tower | 220 gold | 8 → 22 |
| Medieval Age | Bulwark | Fortified Bulwark | 480 gold | 20 → 44 (splash) |
| Gunpowder Age | Citadel Battery | Grand Battery | 900 gold | 42 → 78 (splash) |
| Future Age | Pulse Turret | Ion Cannon | 1,300 gold | 62 → 112 (splash) |
When is a tower upgrade worth it?
An upgrade roughly doubles a tower's damage, and it lasts the whole match. But gold spent on a tower doesn't push the lane. Upgrade when:
- The enemy is massing a push you can't match with units in time.
- You've just won a big fight and have spare gold while your army walks forward.
- The match is heading for overtime and you want every enemy unit that reaches your keep to die fast.
Don't upgrade when you're behind on the lane and the enemy is pushing into your side. A unit that stops the push now is worth more than a tower that shoots a little harder.
Ultimates
Each age has one ultimate, a lane-wide special with no gold cost and no aiming. It deals true damage (armor doesn't reduce it) to every enemy unit on the lane after a short warning that both players can see. The ultimate available to you changes when you advance, and its cooldown carries over.
| Age | Ultimate | Cooldown | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stone Age | Stampede | 60s | 40 true damage to every enemy, knockback, 45% slow for 2.5s |
| Medieval Age | Arcane Storm | 52s | 55 true damage to every enemy, 50% slow for 3s, burn 10/s for 3s |
| Gunpowder Age | Artillery Barrage | 45s | 6 shells of 75 damage (max 2 per unit) |
| Future Age | Orbital Strike | 42s | 190 true damage to every enemy, disables passives for 4s |
Stampede. A herd thunders down the lane: every enemy takes 40, is knocked back and slowed.
Arcane Storm. Arcane lightning strikes every enemy for 55, then burns and heavily slows them for 3s.
Artillery Barrage. Six shells bombard the enemy army, 75 each — packed formations take the most.
Orbital Strike. A beam from orbit hits every enemy for 190; its EMP shuts off their passives for 4s.
How to time your ultimate
- Wait for a crowd. The ultimate hits every enemy, so it's worth more when more enemies are on the lane.
- Cast mid-fight, not before it. An ultimate won't kill full-HP units on its own. Cast it when both armies are trading hits and the wounded units will die.
- Save it for defense when behind. A cast when a big push reaches your keep, together with your towers, can wipe the whole wave and hand you its XP.
- It's ready from the first second. Your Stampede starts off cooldown. Spending it early is fine if it wins a fight, because it's back in 60 seconds.
